EMC Initialization failed – 1

I will discuss different Exchange Management Console Initialization failed Errors.

In this first part series, I will discuss the resolution for duplicate SIDs error message that are shown below. This message is genereated after exchange 2010 service pack installation.

Resolution:

Download and extract PSGetSid tool and check the SIDs for both DC and Exchange 2010.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897417

 If it is fresh installation.

During the VM provisioning process  DC and Exchange server had the same server SIDs. I forcibly removed the Exchange server, cleaned up AD to remove all traces of Exchange and re-installed Exchange.

The EMC Initialization Error caused by duplicated SIDs

Resolution #2 :

The way I recovered my Exchange-VM:

  •  Stop Exchange-Services
  •  Copy the entire Database-Folder to a temporary location (or use the virtual data-disk for the new VM)
  •  Shutdown Exchange-VM
  •  Install new VM or import a template and change the SID with sysprep.
  •  Remove old server account from AD
  •  Rename the new VM with the old name and join the domain
  •  Add the server account to the AD-group “Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Exchange Install Domain Servers” (to avoid  MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGY-server startup error)
  •  Copy the Exchange-database to the same driver/folder
  •  Run “Setup /m:RecoverServer /InstallWindowsComponents” from Exchange 2010 SP1 Folder

Mailbox Move Error Duplicated Mailbox Was Found

You might have face this error message when doing Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 transition.

” A duplicated mailbox was found due to problem during a Move Mailbox procedure. The duplicate mailbox has been deleted.”

To check if there is a duplicate mailbox, please run the following Exchange cmdlet against the source and target mailbox database:

Clean-MailboxDatabase -Identity “<Exchange2010Server>\<StorageGroup>\<SourceorTargetMailboxDatabase>”

After clean up the database on each mailbox databse, we need go to Exchange Management Console -> Recipient Configuration -> Disconnected Mailbox to check the duplicate mailbox.

Tips:

Move the mailbox from Exchange 2010 console instead of Exchange 2007.  It should move the mailbox successfuly.

Exchange Service Pack Error

During transition of Exchange 2007 CCR to Exchange DAG. We need to upgrade the Exchange 2007 CCR to service pack 3.

We were following this technet article.

When we ran setup /upgradecms for upgrade Cluster Mailbox. It was interrupted by the following error message  which you might have seen before while trying to installing Exchange 2007 SP2 or Exchange 2007 SP3.

Setup previously failed while performing the action “install”. You cannot resume setup by performing the action “BuildToBuildUpdate”.

If the initial setup of Exchange 2007 SP1 is resumed successfully via the maintenance mode of the setup, the error can be fixed by deleting a watermark and the action registry key.

We find the registry keys at the following locations;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\Admintools]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\CluseteredMailboxServer]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\MailboxRole]

For example delete the following keys;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\CluseteredMailboxServer]

“Action”=”Install”
“Watermark”=REG_DWORD:7d6d761e(2104325662)

After deleting the keys  we are able to install the Service Packs.
